New Delhi, January 8, 2019 : Emerging electric three-wheeler maker Lohia Auto Industries is in advanced stages of negotiations to form a partnership with a global two-wheeler maker to introduce a new range of electric scooters and bikes in India. The deal is scheduled to be closed by the end of this financial year.
Ayush Lohia, chief executive officer, Lohia Auto Industries said, “We are in discussions with a global firm who will bring in the technology. Lohia Autowill manufacture and market the products. The agreement is expected to be finalised in the next 2-3 months”. Once the partnership is inked, the duo will work on a range of electric two-wheelers scheduled to be showcased at the India Auto Show in 2020.
The products will be manufactured for domestic as well as exports markets in Lohia Auto’s proposed new facility in Andhra Pradesh. Lohia Auto is in discussion with the state government to set up a new facility at an investment of around Rs 100 crore.
Lohia said, “It is expensive exporting from Kashipur in Uttarakhand. We are in talks with the Andhra Pradesh government. We will manufacture electric two-wheelers in association with our new partner. We will also make gasoline three-wheelers there for exports to South Africa and Southeast Asia”.
Separately, the company is also looking at a joint-venture agreement to make lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in the country. Lohia said the aim is to start assembling lithium-ion packs locally and then get into manufacturing.
Lohia Auto makes electric, diesel and CNG three-wheelers. The company also sells premium bikes in association with US-based UM Motorcycles. It sold about 10,000 units of the Renegade and Commando cruiser motorcycles in fiscal 2018.
